THE SHOOT DAY

IT STARTED WITH A DREAM

It was time. For as long as I can remember I had dreamed of becoming an independent film/tv producer and for most of my adult life that’s all it was, a dream. Sure I had all the excuses such as “I can’t do this type of art form by myself” or “it’s not the right time” or my favorite one “I will do this soon”. Well soon never came around and as every new year rolled by, and another resolution to finally do this fell by the wayside, I would get more and more depressed.

Now it’s not to say I did nothing all this time. I produced, directed and hosted a popular local television show for a few years called The Comic Book Show and for the last 5 years I was a part of a local sketch comedy group. As a member of that group, I achieved some recognition for video and audio shorts and the group attained some internet notoriety. But it was never enough.

I came to the realization that it wasn’t anyone else’s fault but my own as to why I haven’t achieved my dream. I was determined that 2008 would be different. I made a resolution that this year, would be the year of no excuses. Little did I know that a fellow member of that very same sketch comedy group, Gia Porras, was feeling the same frustrations. Both of us yearned to do the longer pieces, the indie films and television pilots. Both of us were feeling extremely frustrated. Then one weekday night, I turned to Gia and told her that come hell or high water, we were going to get this done this year. She looked at me with complete agreement and since that day, we have not let anything or anyone slow us down.

WE WILL NOT BE DENIED

Of all the concepts we tossed around over the last couple years this was the one that had ‘legs’ and it just took off in our minds. I could envision it immediately as though it already existed and that’s when you know you’ve got something great. It just must be. It is our hope that we can do it justice.

They say timing is everything. For us, it was at least the doorway to opportunity. Allen and I had both come to the same creative crossroads in our VERY different lives. No more talk, no more brainstorming, it was time for action. Time to take what we believed in most and make a full commitment to its success. (And I haven’t slept much since)

I am constantly amazed at the talent and support we have found. But more than anything by the contagious belief in this project. The sitcom is not dead. The desire/need for situation comedy is still very resident. Reality TV is gone beyond trite, it’s become contrived. It’s time once again for true collaboration, and it’s time for a good laugh. Bring the sitcom back! We will not be DENIED!
